Sunhouse greenhouse

Sunhouse greenhouse

A sunhouse greenhouse (also known as a solar greenhouse) is an agricultural facility that uses natural light and external walls (such as earthen or steel-structured walls) to regulate temperature. It is commonly found in colder regions or areas with significant climate variation. This type of greenhouse maximizes solar energy usage to improve energy efficiency, while the thermal mass or structural characteristics of the walls provide additional temperature control. The design of sunhouse greenhouses is flexible, and by incorporating earthen or steel walls, it enables efficient temperature management and resource utilization.

Structural Advantages

The orientation of a sunhouse greenhouse is generally from north to south, with the east-west extension, and the lighting surface facing south to maximize sunlight exposure. In some regions, the orientation may be shifted 5 to 10 degrees toward the southwest based on local climate characteristics. Sunhouse greenhouse structures come in various types, and depending on the wall materials, they can be classified into earthen wall, steel structure, and others. The walls are typically designed with heat absorption, heat storage, and insulation layers. Active thermal storage technologies include heat-absorbing media on the back wall, heat-absorbing media on the frame surface, circulating air wall heat storage, and circulating air ground heat storage. The greenhouse load design must meet wind and snow resistance requirements, calculated and verified according to national standards in China. The light transmission rate of energy-efficient sunhouse greenhouses is generally above 60% to 80%, with the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the greenhouse maintained at 21 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Name
Parameter
Span
8-20 Meters
* The span of a greenhouse refers to the width of the greenhouse, typically indicating the horizontal distance between the columns. The size of the span directly affects the structural stability, usable space, and planting layout of the greenhouse.
Arch rod spacing
0.8-1 Meters
* The arch rod spacing in a greenhouse refers to the horizontal distance between two adjacent arch rods in the greenhouse frame. Arch rods are typically made of curved steel pipes or steel materials and are used to support the roof and covering materials. The spacing of the arch rods is an important parameter in greenhouse design, directly affecting the structural stability, ventilation, light transmission, and space utilization.
Column spacing
3–4 Meters (for spans greater than 10 meters)
* Column spacing refers to the horizontal distance between two adjacent structural columns in a greenhouse. The columns bear the greenhouse load and ensure structural stability. When designing column spacing, factors such as greenhouse span, climate conditions, and crop types must be considered. Typical column spacing ranges from 3 to 4 meters.
Eave height
1.6-1.8 Meters
* The eave height of a greenhouse refers to the height of the side walls, typically measured as the vertical distance from the ground to the top of the structural columns or supports. Eave height is usually located below the ridge of the greenhouse roof and differs from the overall roof height. It primarily determines the headroom within the greenhouse, influencing critical factors such as crop growing conditions and airflow.
Ridge height
5-6 Meters
* The ridge height of a greenhouse refers to the vertical distance from the ground to the top of the greenhouse, typically the highest point of the roof or arched structure. It is a key design parameter that directly affects crop growing conditions, space utilization, airflow, and temperature control within the greenhouse.
